WAHIAWA, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 24-year-old Waianae man was killed in a moped crash in Wahiawa Saturday night.
It happened on Wilikina Drive just before 8 p.m. near Kamananui Road.
Honolulu Police say the man was traveling north at a high rate of speed when he lost control and was ejected from the moped.
A 24-year-old Nanakuli man who was traveling closely behind and was unable to avoid a collision, lost control of his moped and was also ejected.
The Waianae man was pronounced dead at the scene. The Nanakuli man was taken to a hospital in serious condition. A third rider in the group was reportedly uninjured.
None of the riders were wearing helmets, officials said.
"The roadway is dark. It had been raining a little bit earlier so we believe that maybe wet road conditions could have been a problem as well," Lt. James Slayter of the Honolulu Police Department said.
Police shut down Wilikina in both directions from Kamananui Road to Kaukonahua Road. The road reopened around 11:30 p.m. Saturday.
The victim's identity has not yet been officially released.
This is the 47th fatal crash on Oahu compared to 31 at the same time last year. The investigation is ongoing.
