Governor requests presidential disaster declaration for Olivia

9/11 4 p.m.: Olivia's impacts starting to be felt as tropical storm nears island chain

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The governor has requested a presidential disaster declaration as Olivia targets the islands.

The declaration asks the president to declare the state a major disaster area in the event torrential rains and wind from Olivia cause significant damage.

In the request, the governor asked for:

  • Help to airlift supplies between islands;
  • Generators at emergency shelters;
  • And technical assistance, including with clean-up efforts.

In addition, the governor is asking for help to support search and rescue, potential medical evacuations, mass care and shelter efforts.
