All public schools in Maui County to close as Olivia threatens state

9/11 4 p.m.: Olivia's impacts starting to be felt as tropical storm nears island chain

KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - All public schools in Maui County will be closed Wednesday as Olivia threatens the state with torrential rains and high winds.

After-school activities for Maui, Molokai and Lanai are also canceled Wednesday.

At this time, there are no other public schools in the state that are expected to close.

"In order to give our families on Maui, Molokai and Lanai time to prepare, and with the early release time on Wednesday, we will be closing all Maui County schools and offices in anticipation of the storm's arrival," said Superintendent Christina Kishimoto, in a news release.

"We appreciate everyone's patience during this time as we work with our partner agencies to monitor the storm, and we will continue to make decisions based on the safety and well-being of our students and staff."
