HILO, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - Following recent heavy rain this week, the Department of Health has issued a brown water advisory for some Hawaii Island coastlines.
The advisory was posted Tuesday and covers the entire length of Hilo Bay, and stretches along the Hamakua Coast to Laupahoehoe.
Officials are advising the public to stay out of the water as it may be contaminated by runoff from neighborhoods.
"Not all coastal areas may be impacted by runoff, however, if the water is brown, you are advised to stay out. Continue to practice good personal hygiene and follow-up with your primary care physician if you have any health concerns," the DOH said in an alert.
Runoff may contain pesticides, fecal matter, other pathogens, chemicals and flood debris that could make you sick.
Health officials will continue to monitor water quality before removing the advisory.
