KEKAHA, Kauai (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 4-hour standoff on the west side of the Garden Isle Wednesday ended with two people dead in an apparent murder-suicide, Kauai officials said.
The two are believed to have been married.
Kauai police responded to the home on Elepaio Road around 2 p.m. after getting a call from a man who threatened to harm himself. A heavy police presence was seen as the standoff stretched into the early evening hours.
Around 4 p.m., KPD's Special Services Team and Crisis Negotiators arrived on scene after a perimeter to the home was established.
Police said a 53-year-old man barricaded himself in the home. Authorities advised the public to stay away from the area.
One neighbor was so close to the action, he could hear crisis negotiators talking to the man.
"I seen all the SWAT and the Kauai police rushing down the street," neighbor Andru Davis-Henry said. "They were asking if he needed any medical attention. If he and his wife were OK, if they were alive if they needed anything."
After making several failed attempts to contact the man, authorities made the decision to enter the home around 6:15 p.m.
That's when they discovered two bodies: A 50-year-old woman and the suspect. Police said the two died of apparent gunshot wounds. The man's wound is believed to have been self-inflicted.
Their identities have not yet been released.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing. An autopsy is pending.
The situation is developing. This story will be updated.
