KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Three people were hospitalized after a car crash involving three vehicles shut down Kuhio highway around 5 p.m. on Friday.
At around 4:40 p.m., a Ford SUV was heading south on Kuhio Highway when it was struck by an oncoming Honda sedan, while trying to turn left onto Marine Camp Access Road.
A Chevy pickup truck behind the sedan attempted to stop when it also hit the Ford vehicle.
The driver of the SUV, a 47-year-old Kapaa man, and his passenger, a 48-year-old Kapaa woman, sustained serious injuries from the crash and were taken to Wilcox Hospital in critical condition.
The driver of the Honda sedan, a 28-year-old Kapaa woman, was also taken to the hospital, but has since been released.
The 53-year old Kapaa man driving the pickup was not injured in the crash and was released at the scene.
Kauai police officers began directing northbound traffic on Kuhio Highway around 5:45 p.m. and dedicated the Wailua Bypass road to southbound travel.
KPD reopened the highway around 8 p.m. once officers completed their on-scene investigation.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
