HONOKAA, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A man is dead after an apparent drowning in waters near Honokaa on Hawaii Island.

The Hawaii County Fire Department says the man in his 50s was found floating face down in about 5 feet of water at Waipio Valley Beach.

It happened just before noon Saturday. Bystanders pulled the man ashore and initiated CPR until rescuers got there.

Due to the remote location, rescue crews utilized special terrain vehicles to access the shoreline.

Additional life saving efforts were initiated but were unsuccessful.

Fire officials say he later died. An autopsy will determine the man's official cause of death.
