HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A man became Oahu's 36th traffic fatality this year after a deadly crash near Nimitz Highway.
The crash happened early Saturday morning around 1:30 a.m. Honolulu police released details about the crash Sunday morning.
Police said the driver of a vehicle was heading east on the H-1 freeway nearing the Nimitz Highway off-ramp. He was believed to have been driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle, drifted into the dirt median and crashed into a concrete pillar.
HPD said the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe speed was a contributing factor though it is unclear if drugs or alcohol were involved.
The man's identity has not yet been released. The investigation is ongoing.
Around this time last year, there were 26 traffic fatalities.
