Kauai firefighters respond to 4 back-to-back brush fires

KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Kauai firefighters responded to four separate fires across the Garden Isle on Wednesday.

The first fire was around 8 a.m. by a walkway near the Mahelona Hospital off Kawaihau Road, and firefighters say it was about 10-by-15 feet in size.

The affected area was contained, extinguished and cleared by 8:20 a.m..

The second brush fire, which was reported around 11:30 a.m. was on the makai side of Kaumualii highway in Waimea near the Russian Fort Elizabeth.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire before it spread across the highway, and crews from Gay and Robinson Inc. assisted with water tankers and other heavy equipment. fire crews were able to completely clear the scene by 1:40 p.m.

The third brush fire, in Kekaha, happened around 5:30 p.m. and Kauai firefighters were able to fully extinguish the 2,000 square-foot fire within 20 minutes.

The final call of the day was a small fire along the cliffside near Glass Beach in Elele that began at 8:15 a.m., and firefighters were able to clear the scene in around 15 minutes.

The causes for all four fires remain under investigation, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Kauai Police Department at 808-241-1711.
