Box jellyfish influx leads city officials to close Hanauma Bay

EAST HONOLULU, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - City officials announced the closure of Hanauma Bay Monday morning.

Officials said the closure is due to a high influx of box jellyfish and multiple stings reported.

The Information and Visitor's Center at the topside of the bay will remain open, but access to the beach will be restricted.

Hanauma Bay will remain closed on Tuesday for scheduled weekly maintenance.

Officials will reevaluate the box jellyfish amounts on Wednesday, and determine if the beach can be reopened then.
