Maui brush fire scorches 10 acres of land at agricultural park

MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Maui fire officials say that a brush fire on Sunday has scorched 10 acres of land in the area of Pulehu Road near Kula Agriculture Park.

MFD crews responded to the fire at around 2:15 p.m. and arrived to find an active fire in dry brush in the area. Firefighters are having difficulty putting out the fires due to shifting winds, according to officials.

As of 4 p.m. on Sunday the brush fire has burned through 10 acres of land throughout the park area, and is expected to increase in size, according to officials.

At this time, no structures are in danger of fire damage, but Maui Fire Command is asking for the evacuation of the north east portion of the Kula Agriculture Park.

Lots 10, 11, and 16 have been evacuated, and roads are closed at the intersections of Omaopio Road and Pulehu Road, as well as Holopuni Road and Pulehu Road.

Fire crews remain on the scene and are working to extinguish hot spots and secure the fire's perimeter. The cause of the fire has not been determined.

No injuries were reported.
