KAHULUI, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 37-year-old pedestrian died from injuries after being struck by an oncoming vehicle at a Maui intersection on Saturday morning.
Just before 5:15 a.m. a white Ford van traveling east on Kaahumanu Avenue hit a pedestrian crossing the intersection diagonally, outside of the marked crosswalk.
The pedestrian, identified as 37-year-old Yonina Helgenberger of Kahului, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 55-year-old man driving the van, also from Kahului, did not sustain any injuries.
It is not yet clear whether speed, drugs, or alcohol were factors in the collision, according to officials. The investigation into the cause of the collision is still ongoing.
This is Maui County's eleventh traffic fatality this year, compared to four this time last year.
