All clear called after 'suspicious item' investigation snarled traffic, triggered evacuations

FORT SHAFTER - A "suspicious item" investigation that closed Middle Street and triggered evacuations Thursday afternoon posed no threat.

The item, later identified as a piece of construction equipment, was found near the fence line at Fort Shafter Army Base about 3:15 p.m.

Police evacuated several area homes, and closed Middle Street in the area from Rose Street to North King Street.

Traffic was bumper to bumper in the area, including on King Street.

An Army news release said the item was found near Warner and Wilson roads.
