Local tennis sensation Alyssa Tobita bowed out of the second round of qualifying matches at the Tennis Championships of Honolulu yesterday afternoon, losing a back-and-forth three-set thriller to Michaela Gordon.
Gordon, a Stanford tennis player, took the first set 7-6 (4) after winning the tiebreaker before Tobita was able to find her rhythm in the second frame, running away with a 6-1 win.
However, Gordon was able to break Tobita’s serve and closed out the third set 6-3 to clinch the match.
“Thank you to everyone who came out to support me. It was special to have won my first pro match on Hawaii soil and play in front of a home crowd,” Tobita said.
