Mililani alum, tennis standout is one step closer to playing in the U.S. Open

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A former Mililani tennis star won her professional debut match over the weekend, putting her one step closer to earning a chance to play in the U.S. Open.

At the Tennis Championships of Honolulu at UH Manoa, Alyssa Tobita triumphed over Alexandra Stevenson, who at one point was ranked number 18 in the world.

Tobita was among 18 competitors at the championships.

"Tobita stormed into the first set taking an early break to go up 6-1. After trading serves in the second, Alyssa kept her composure to serve out the match 6-4. Stevenson, a Wimbledon semi-finalist, played a classic game with big serves and one-handed backhands. However, Tobita's physical conditioning and speed ultimately helped her to secure the win," the U.S. Tennis Association Hawaii Pacific said in a news release.

The event kicked off a 5-week challenge which will award an American man and woman with a single's main draw wild card into the U.S. Open.
