Police: Speed, inattention factors in fatal Nimitz crash

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 43-year-old Aiea man was killed in an accident near the Honolulu airport after crashing his moped into the back of a car on Friday night, according to Honolulu police.

Investigators say the crash happened because the man wasn't paying attention when a car in front of him slowed down on Nimitz Highway under the viaduct.

The Kapolei woman driving the car he hit was not injured in the collision.

Police shut down all westbound lanes of Nimitz Highway between Puuloa Road and Peltier Avenue for three hours after the fatal accident. Roads have since been reopened.

Police say speed and inattention were factors.

This is Oahu's 30th traffic death this year, compared to 22 this time last year. Police did not specify if the man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

Officials have not yet released the man's identity.
