HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - When Uncle Francis Nagata gives, it affects a LOT of people. And he really DOES give from the heart. LITERALLY. What sparked Francis' interest to start donating? Well back during the Vietnam War, there was a call that went out that somebody urgently needed blood.
That's some 50 years that Francis has made the commitment to help others. Francis says that people don't think about giving blood until they or someone they know needs the blood. Uncle Francis not only donates blood, but he's like a walking billboard for the Hawaii Blood Bank. Francis collects belt buckles...but there is ONE that is very special to him.
"One of my most prized possessions is a belt buckle that I have and there's a coin on it that shows It's a coin that commemorates the 50th anniversary of the blood bank. The blood bank was started way back when Pearl Harbor. And because of that, that's how the Blood Bank got started. And this is 50 years later.
When I got this coin, I added it to my belt buckle; It enhances the belt buckle. Whenever I wear it I get a lot of comments from people. To me that's a great way to getting people to recognize the blood bank."
And when you do the math on Uncle Francis, it'a amazing how many people he's touched.
