BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

Three federal emergency response teams have been deployed to Puna to help those affected by the eruption.

The 20 AmeriCorps members left from Mississippi on Saturday to help the thousands displaced by lava flows in lower Puna. Officials said on Sunday that at least 533 homes have been destroyed by lava flows.

The group, which serves through FEMA Corps, will provide information about resources and assistance available to displaced residents.

The team is also responsible for relaying information back to FEMA on what is most urgently needed in the disaster area.

The members of this team were previously deployed for relief efforts in Puerto Rico following Hurricane Maria.
