Maui police investigate after moped crash kills man, leaves woman seriously injured

Maui police are investigating after a collision involving a car and a moped left one dead and another seriously injured on Saturday.

Around 4:30 a.m., a man and woman were riding a moped on Puunene Avenue headed north near the intersection of Airport Access Road in Kahului, when a silver 2006 Toyota sedan struck them from behind, according to MPD.

The 19-year-old female passenger was ejected while the sedan continued to push the moped and the man along Puunene Avenue before stopping north of Puukani Street. The driver of the Toyota sedan allegedly fled the scene before police got there.

The roadway was closed for about nine hours while police conducted their investigation, according to police.

The man operating the moped, identified as 36-year-old Joey Ruiz of Kahului, was pronounced dead at the scene. The 19-year-old woman who was riding with him was transported to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room with serious injuries.

Police later found the Toyota sedan parked unattended in front of a nearby residence in Kahului.  

Maui officers conducted a follow-up investigation where they arrested a 35-year old male from Kahului,who is suspected of operating the Toyota sedan.

It is not yet clear of speed, drugs, or alcohol was involved. The investigation is ongiong.

This is Maui County’s fourth traffic fatality this year.
