HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - HGEA is endorsing Colleen Hanabusa for governor.
The Hawaii Government Employees Association is Hawaii's largest union, with some 42,000 members.
HGEA made the endorsement announcement Tuesday, saying Hanabusa is a "strong leader who understands the struggles of Hawaii's working families."
Hanabusa is challenging incumbent David Ige, who has said he looks forward to the opportunity to highlight his record of accomplishments.
UPW, which represents about 14,000 blue-collar workers employed at schools, hospitals and other locations around the state, has endorsed Ige.
In a statement Tuesday, Hanabusa thanked HGEA for the endorsement.
"The Hawaii we know and love was built by labor," she said. "On behalf of our campaign and supporters, I extend my heartfelt thanks and appreciation to ... HGEA, which has placed its trust in me and our campaign to build a better future for Hawaii's families."
