MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Bystanders came to a surfer's aid on Saturday evening after finding him unresponsive about 40 yards from shore.
The 68-year-old Kula man was surfing just north of Ukumehame Beach Park before he was found floating in the water. Bystanders brought the victim to shore and began CPR while they waited for paramedics to arrive.
An off duty paramedic, firefighter, and Coast Guard member from Maui were at a nearby beach and eventually took over CPR efforts until a paramedic unit from Maalaea arrived at 6:38 p.m.
Emergency crews ultimately revived the victim before transporting him to Maui Memorial Medical Center in critical condition around 7 p.m. Saturday.
