Man charged in fatal hit-and-run incident on H-1 Freeway

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu prosecutors charged a man with several crimes on Monday in connection with a fatal hit-and-run incident late last month.

Steven Headington has been accused of fleeing the scene of a fatal accident and driving a stolen vehicle, according to Honolulu police.

Police say Headington was allegedly driving the stolen vehicle when he hit a van on the H-1 Freeway near the Wilder off-ramp, and fled the scene.

The collision caused 37-year-old Phillip Wallace to be ejected from the back of stolen the pickup, and killed. The story made headlines last week after Wallace's widow, Luaipou Wallace, confronted Headington after finding him with the help of a tip on social media.

"He didn't know when or at what time he flew out of the truck, but as soon as he crashed, he said he ran over to the overpass and he hid under there in a bush," Luaipou Wallace said.

Headington turned himself in to authorities at Luaipou's request on Thursday.

His bail is set at $100,000.
