HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - The state reached a $3 million settlement on Wednesday with Takata corporation over its faulty airbags.

More than 40 million vehicles in the United States were recalled as a result of the faulty airbags produced by the Japan-based automotive parts company. Hawaii was the first state to sue Takata, saying it should have known the dangers.

The Japanese airbag manufacturer must now pay $3 million to Hawaii, in addition to its other settlements concerning the defective airbags, which include the U.S. Virgin Islands and New Mexico.
