HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The area surrounding the Beretania Street headquarters of the Honolulu Police Department was evacuated Monday afternoon while authorities investigated a possible explosive device, according to a police department spokesperson.
A member of the public dropped off what may have been a piece of military ordnance at the main station, the spokesperson said. The department's Specialized Services Division investigated the device before issuing an all-clear at around 4:50 p.m.
All westbound lanes of Beretania St. were closed at the Ward Ave. intersection for nearly an hour while police conducted their investigation. Police officials also sent out an advisory Monday afternoon asking commuters to avoid using the Kinau Street exit from the H-1 Freeway due to significant traffic congestion.
Roads in the area were already scheduled to be closed Monday evening for a Police Week event in which officers marched from the main station to the Hawaii State Capitol, roughly a half-mile away. Those closures, including as many as three lanes of Beretania Street in the westbound direction, were scheduled to begin at around 5 p.m.
