HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - For the second season in a row, the Rainbow Wahine tennis team will have a representative in the 2018 NCAA Division I Singles Championships.
And for the second year in a row, that player is Petra Melounova.
The standout sophomore has been on a tear for the 'Bows since her arrival to Manoa over a year ago and has taken the team by storm. Melounova is one of 64 singles players chosen to take part in the championship on May 23-28 at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
This is the fourth time in the last five years that a Wahine tennis player has earned a spot in the NCAA Singles Championships and represented the Big West. Only former Wahine star Cindy Nguyen (2014, '15) has represented Hawaii in the championships.
Last year, Melounova became the first player in program history to win in the NCAA Tournament, upsetting 16th-ranked Rachel Pierson (Texas A&M) in the opening round before falling in the second round to LSU's Joana Valle Costa.
Melounova, who was also named the Big West Player of the Year for the second-straight season, had a 14-3 singles record this season including eight-straight wins.
The Czech Republic native has proven she can hang around the best players in the country as she proved to herself and the rest of the sport how good she is with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over No. 10 Michaela Gordon from Stanford back in March.
