PALMDALE, CA (RNN) - A 14-year-old shot another student in the arm at Highland High School Friday, authorities said. The injured student is in stable condition and expected to make a full recovery.

According to officials, the teen ditched the gun and ran from the school, the Associated Press said.

The suspect called his father and told him he shot the gun in the air, according to the AP. The father called a friend who was an off-duty police officer and told him that the boy was at a nearby shopping center.

Police picked up the suspect, who has not been named, at a nearby shopping center and recovered the firearm. The victim is expected to fully recover from the injury, according to the AP.

Law enforcement believes the shooting resulted from a dispute between the two involved but are still working on an exact motive. Deputies cleared the school, but an active investigation is ongoing.

"Bulldogs, at this time, there is no threat to Highland High School," said the principal on his Twitter account.  "The campus remains on lockdown as we work with law enforcement to determine release procedures for students."

Sheriff's deputies also investigated at nearby Manzanita Elementary for a report of gunshots, but they reported they found no evidence of shots fired or injuries.
