HALEAKALA, Maui (HawaiiNewsNow) - A 34-year-old Indiana man who was found dead after being struck by a fallen rock while hiking on Maui has been identified.
The News Sentinel reports the victim was Greg Miller, a resident of Fort Wayne.
According to Maui fire officials, Miller was hiking at Haleakala National Park with three friends when they stopped to sit near the base of a 200-foot waterfall at Oheo Gulch.
While they were sitting, a large rock struck him in the head, rendering him unconscious.
The victim's friends told Maui firefighters that Miller was not breathing and was without a pulse, despite their attempts at CPR.
Maui firefighters arrived at the park at 6:50 p.m. They determined it was unsafe to access the hiker due to continuously falling rocks.
Firefighters were unable to retrieve his body until the next morning.
He was pronounced dead at the scene with excessive head trauma.
