Rangers atop Mauna Kea evacuate summit due to strong winds

MAUNA KEA, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - A high wind warning is in effect for Big Island summits until 6 a.m. Tuesday, the National Weather Service says.

Park rangers evacuated the summit of Mauna Kea on Monday when wind gusts began surpassing 70 miles per hour.

Thick fog, poor visibility and slick road conditions also contributed to the evacuations.

A the warning means winds are expected to be at least 56 m.p.h., with gusts over 66 m.p.h.
