HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A police officer on the Big Island is being charged with third-degree assault after allegedly hitting a child in a runaway home on Friday afternoon.

Staff at the Salvation Army Interim Home in Hilo say that 32-year-old Daniel Kuwabara kicked a boy's leg and then hit him in the head with his hand, while at the home. Kuwabara was at the facility to speak with the boy who had returned after running away.

Kuwabara turned himself in on Saturday night and was released from jail after posting a $500 bail.

He is currently on leave without pay.
