HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Sunday-morning beach cleanup went awry when volunteers discovered several used needles on Ala Moana Beach Park.
Members of a volunteer group, Honolulu Umisakura, were cleaning up Ala Moana Beach Park Sunday morning before noon, when they discovered 22 hypodermic needles at Ala Moana Beach Park. Members of the group say that the find is quite common during beach clean up events on the island.
The group, which originally started in Japan, recently opened a chapter on Oahu and is hoping to find a partner to help dispose of hazardous waste, like the needles.
"We want the kids to go fishing, we want them to go to the beach, we want them to enjoy nature here," said Issei Hamamoto, treasurer of Honolulu Umisakura. "Seeing all of those needles, it actually frightens me."
