HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - A large north-northwest swell is expected to rise quickly Saturday, with a high surf warning taking effect Saturday afternoon for the north and west shores of Kauai and Niihau.
A high surf advisory will also be taking effect for the north and west shores of Oahu and Molokai and the north-facing shores of Maui.
The surf alerts will be in effect from 2 p.m. Saturday until 6 a.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.
On Niihau and Kauai, waves are forecast to rise to 15 to 20 feet late Saturday afternoon, peaking at 20 to 25 feet Saturday night into Sunday night.
For Oahu, Molokai and Maui, north and west shores will rise to 10 to 15 feet late Saturday afternoon, peaking at 18 to 22 feet late Saturday night into Sunday night. On Maui, north shore waves will rise to 8 to 11 feet late Saturday afternoon, peaking at 12 to 18 feet.
A high surf warning means that only very experienced persons should enter the water. All others should remain well on shore,
