NANAKULI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Honolulu's medical examiner has identified the man killed in a moped crash on Farrington Highway Friday night.
He was identified as 33-year-old Akoni Cruz.
According to police, Cruz was traveling eastbound near Nanaikeola Street, waiting to turn left into a driveway when he was struck from behind by another man driving a Toyota pickup.
Officials added, the force of the impact flew Cruz into the path of an oncoming Chevrolet pickup heading westbound.
"As a result of this last collusion, the moped being broadsided by the westbound vehicle, the moped rider was temporarily trapped under the pick up truck," Lt. Ben Moszkowicz with HPD said.
Cruz was taken to the hospital with critical injuries where he died later that night.
Police said Cruz was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, and Honolulu police do not believe speed or alcohol to be factors in the crash.
This is the 19th traffic fatality this year, compared to 14 this time last year.
