Big Island Mayor Harry Kim hospitalized on Oahu after experiencing chest pains

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Big Island Mayor Harry Kim is hospitalized on Oahu after experiencing chest pains on Thursday, county officials said.

Officials said he drove himself to the Hilo Medical Center around 4:30 a.m.

He was medevaced to Oahu around 6:45 a.m. as a precautionary measure, where doctors are running tests.

Kim, 78, has suffered three heart attacks over the past few years. He also underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2008.

"He knows the symptoms, and he knows what to do," said Managing Director Wil Okabe, who will serve as acting mayor will Kim is out on sick leave. "We're offering prayers for Harry, knowing that he'll be back very shortly."
