Over the weekend, a group of energetic Maui volunteers ended up collecting over 2,000 items for Kauai residents affected by flooding — enough to fill an entire shipping container.
Volunteers collected rubber boots, first aid kits, non-perishable foods, baby items, cleaning supplies and many more items necessary for relief and recovery. The group also accepted walk-up cash contributions that amounted to $1,150 as well as $2,200 in gift cards.
Community volunteer leaders Zeke Kalua, Mahina Martin and Tiare Lawrence organized the two-day event, with support from local businesses.
"Today I was reminded again of how proud I am to be from Maui," Lawrence said. "Helping to organize the drive was the least I could do to support flood relief efforts. My heart goes out to Kauai and all of the families affected by the flood."
