BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hawaiian monk seal pup found playing with a knife on Sunday prompted the Department of Land and Natural Resources to remind residents to put their garbage where it belongs.

A group of people were watching the young monk seal, named Manuiwa, on a Big Island beach on Sunday when they saw him play with a bright orange object. Upon further inspection, they realized Manuiwa's new toy was a sharp fishing knife.

Luckily, the monk seal pup was holding the knife by the handle, and the knife was retrieved without any injury to the animal.

"There was real concern that the seal pup might swallow the knife," said an officer from the Department of Land and Natural Resources who recorded the incident.

"It's a reminder to all of us to properly dispose of our trash and not to leave it on Hawaii's beaches or in the ocean."
