HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The No. 3 University of Hawai'i women's beach volleyball team completed a perfect weekend with a pair of shutout wins on Sunday to capture the Queen's Cup in Waikiki. The Rainbow Wahine blanked Utah 5-0 in the semifinals, before doing the same to Washington in the championship mach.
UH went 5-0 during the two-day tournament with four sweeps. UH is now 28-3 on the season and riding a 23-match win streak. The 28 wins is one shy of the single-season school record (29) set by last year's squad.
The Rainbow Wahine breezed past the Utes (0-5) in its semifinal match, winning in straight sets on four of five courts. The only match to go three sets was at the No. 1 flight. For the second straight day Emily Maglio and Kaiwi Schuct found themselves in a battle with Adora Anae and Dani Barton and for the second-straight day they pulled off a three-set win. The duo extended its school-record win streak to 19 matches later in the day during the championship when they defeated Jordan Anderson and Kimmy Gardiner of Washington in another three-setter.
Against Washington in the title match, UH also won four of its five courts in convincing, straight-set fashion. Carly Kan and Laurel Weaver avenged their three-set loss to Carly Dehoog and Shayne McPherson on Saturday – the only point UH dropped all weekend – with a 21-17, 21-15 win on Sunday.
A couple of other UH tandems continued their tear. Ari Homayun and Amy Ozee extended their win streak to 17 matches and were named the tournament's Most Outstanding Pair after overwhelming their competition all weekend. Morgan Martin and Lea Monkhouse were also dominant – as evidenced by a 21-10, 21-5 win over Melissa Powell and Tawnee Luafalemana of Utah in the first match of the day. The duo has won 12 straight and is 21-1 in its last 22 matches.
The Rainbow Wahine will be back in action next weekend when they host Arizona State and Boise State in round-robin action, April 14-15, at the T.C. Ching Athletic Complex. Sunday's match will be Senior Night with UH's
