Maui halau takes top honors at Merrie Monarch Festival

The ladies of Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka are the 2018 overall Merrie Monarch Festival champions.

Dancing under the direction of Kumu Napua Greig, the halau took first place overall in the wahine division, first place in wahine 'auana and second place in wahine kahiko.

“It’s a good year. It really really is. We’re just grateful to even be on this stage amongst the best hula practitioners. It’s a great honor and so we’re just very humbled and we just aloha everyone. We’re really happy,” said Kumu Greig.

Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka’s Shalia Kamakaokalani is also Miss Aloha Hula 2018. Kumu Greig says they are so grateful to all who helped make their Merrie Monarch win possible.

“My ohana that supports us. All of their ohana. We sacrifice a lot of that time to do what we love. We’re just really grateful that they kako’o us, “ said Greig.

The kane of Ka Leo O Laka I Ka Hikina O Ka La won first place kane overall, first place kane auana and kahiko with their mele that honored Hokule’a and her Malama Honua voyage around the world.

“We do it for Hilo, for our people. We lift up our lahui. We lift up Hokulea and that’s why we do it,” said Kumu Kaleo Trinidad.

The wahine of Ka Lei Mokihana o Leinaala came in third overall with a third place finish in kahiko and second in ‘auana — which was a mele about the beauty of the Garden Island.

“We are just so thrilled and honored and feel so so blessed. We are so proud to call Kaua?i our home. We are thrilled absolutely thrilled and totally appreciative,” said Kumu Leina?ala Pavao.

Merrie Monarch Festival President Luana Kawelu says she’s proud of all 29 kane and wahine groups who performed and she’s grateful she didn’t have to choose a winner.

“It was another incredible year of competition. These kumu and their haumana work so hard to prepare and it shows,” said Kawelu.
