Police impersonators rob man on Big Island

BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Two men on the Big Island are accused of impersonating officers to rob a driver on Highway 19.

The victim told police that he was drowsy when he decided to pull over to the side of the road near Maulua Gulch and fell asleep.

Police said he was awoken by a flashlight and a voice that claimed to be police asking for his ID.

Shortly after ahnding over his ID, another man opened the victim's passenger door and took items from his car. The suspects took off in an SUV.

Police say the men were not wearing uniforms, nor did they flash a badge during the robbery.

The investigation is ongoing.
