HANALEI, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) - Severe weather this winter wreaked havoc for some parts of the state, and especially so for parts of Kauai, where heavy downpours triggered a series of landslides along Kuhio Highway.
That's why Gov. David Ige has issued an emergency proclamation for the island.
The first series of landslides happened on Feb. 23 near Haena and Wainiha. Another round of wet weather caused landslides again on March 22. The landslides blocked the highway, isolating those two communities in Hanalei.
The proclamation means that state funds can be used for relief efforts. In this case, the Hawaii Department of Transportation wants to expedite work to secure the slope and prevent future landslides.
