Max Holloway isn't about taking the easy route. He's shown that by agreeing to a match against one of the toughest fighters in the UFC on less than a week's notice. Many analysts believe the odds aren't in his favor. Not only because his opponent, Khabib Nurmagomedov, is undefeated, but also because Holloway has to make weight in just a matter of days. But his head coach tells us if there's anyone who can do it, it's the Waianae grad.
"Even though it's hard - he almost craves that, Rylan Lizares said. "Unlike any other fighter I've personally coached, he's so easy to coach because of how tough he is mentally. He's willing to put in the extra work, the extra time - he's willing to do whatever to be the champ," added Lizares.
Lizares was actually in the hospital with his wife, when he got the call from Holloway on Easter Sunday. Lizares' wife had just given birth a day earlier to a baby girl - their second child. He said he asked his wife and she gave him the OK, so he started packing for Brooklyn. And that night, he got on a flight with Holloway and the rest of the team.
You can watch the UFC featherweight champion fight for the lightweight title on Saturday evening.
