City Councilman Ernie Martin walked out to his car in the Nuuanu YMCA parking lot Monday morning to find a truly unpleasant surprise — his car had been broken into.
Between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. Monday, Martin says that someone broke his car door window with a reusable water bottle and took his city-issued cellphone.
Honolulu police suspect that a group known for going to various places to break into cars and steal items inside, may have been behind the incident.
In a public tweet, Martin posted pictures of the incident and warned drivers to be cautious.
Martin says the cost to repair his window was $600, HPD has not yet identified a suspect.
