Big Island residents flock to Hokulea during ceremony ahead of hula festival

HILO, BIG ISLAND (HawaiiNewsNow) - Hokulea sailed into Hilo Monday morning — just in time for the Merrie Monarch Festival.

The ceremony, which was held at the Grand Naninloa Hotel, was replete with chanting, music and general revelry. Several people were there to greet Hokulea and its crew.

The voyaging canoe was also the guest of honor at a ceremony in Hilo on Sunday, where some 2,000 people showed up.

The Merrie Monarch festival, begins Wednesday and runs until Saturday.

The canoe will remain in Hilo until April 28 when it moors at at Kawaihae Harbor.
