Kalihi Valley school recognized for stream restoration project

KALIHI VALLEY (HawaiiNewsNow) - A group of Kalihi kids at Kaewai Elementary School are being recognized for their innovative stream restoration project.

Since 2016, a small group of students in Kalihi Valley have been part of a "Stream Team" that works together to restore the condition of the Kaewai Stream that runs near their school.

Their goal is to rehabilitate the area to a natural functioning stream system. On Monday, Rep. John M. Mizuno donated native plants to the project in a small ceremony to laud the group for its environmental efforts.

"This is pono," Mizuno said in a news release. "This is a positive story of Kalihi Youth and it is an honor to recognize their fine effort to accept ownership of our neighborhood and improve our communities."
