The Rainbow Wahine softball team dropped its Big West Conference opener on the road today against No. 18 Long Beach State, 6-0.
The ‘Bows (16-14, 0-1 BWC) were shutout by an aggressive 49ers side (27-7, 1-0 BWC) that recorded four runs on five hits in the second inning before Taylor Rowland hit a solo-shot to right to extend their lead to 5-0 in the bottom of the third.
LBSU added its final run in the bottom of the sixth off a throwing error by Hawaii go extend its lead to six.
Danielle Garcielita led the way for the Wahine, going 2-for-2 at the plate. Starter Dana Thomsen took the loss, dropping her record to 9-10 overall and 0-1 in conference on the season.
49ers pitcher Cielo Meza improved to 15-2 in a complete game shutout, surrendering just four hits with no walks and an impressive 17 strikeouts.
The two teams will conclude their three-game series tomorrow, Saturday, March 31 with a doubleheader starting at 10:00 am HT at the Beach Softball Complex.
