OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Starting April 2, the left northbound lane on Kamehameha Highway will be closed for a traffic study.
The closure will affect the left northbound lane between the Roosevelt Bridge and Lanikuhana Avenue from 9 a.m. on April 2, to 7 p.m. on April 5.
HDOT's study will determine if continuous shoulders for bicyclists and pedestrians will be installed. The closure would test how traffic would operate if the lane were closed to allow 4-foot to 6.5-foot shoulders.
Installing the shoulders in each direction would reduce northbound travel lanes from two lanes to one lane. In HDOT's proposal, the center lane would be removed to provide additional shoulder space, as well as a center median to separate the north- and southbound lanes.
The study will also collect data on how the change affects travel times along the route.
