MILILANI, OAHU (HawaiiNewsNow) - Parents received a frightening letter on Tuesday after a student at Kipapa Elementary school told faculty that a strange man tried to grab him.
Around 9:10 a.m., a boy reported being approached by an unknown man while washing his hands in one of the boys' bathrooms on campus.
The boy said that the man tried to grab his hand, but the student was able to run out of the bathroom and to his class before the stranger could touch him.
School officials contacted Honolulu police shortly after the boy reported the incident, and a sweep was conducted across the campus. A letter regarding the incident was sent home with students the same day.
In efforts to ramp up safety at the Mililani school, gates on Kuahelani Avenue will be locked from 8:15 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. and students will start going to the restroom in pairs.
As an added precaution, school counselors will be going over "stranger danger" with students during the week. Parents are also encouraged to reinforce safety practices at home.
