No, the Honolulu Fire Department isn't calling you to ask for donations

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The Honolulu Fire Department is warning residents about a new phone scam.

The scammers are calling Oahu phones from a toll-free number that's apparently based on the East Coast, and asking for donations to HFD.

HFD says that there have been a number of calls concerning solicitors asking for money under the guise of fundraising for firefighters and their families.

"I recently got a call, other folks got calls," said Honolulu Fire Capt. Scot Seguirant. "Just wanted to let the public know that that's not affiliated with us."

The Honolulu Fire Department does not petition for donations, nor is it affiliated with the solicitor.

HFD says that residents receiving solicitations should gather information about the caller and determine whether the services are legitimate. The fire captain said he called the number being used in the scam and said he thinks it rerouted to a number on the mainland.
