LAS VEGAS, NEVADA (HawaiiNewsNow) - On Monday morning, 29-year-old Monique "Nikki" Leiwalo was on her way to work in Las Vegas when a SUV plowed into her, sending her Dodge Dart crashing into a pole.

Leiwalo, originally from the islands, died at the scene.

So did her unborn child — she was eight months pregnant.

"Everyone that knew Nikki knew her as a sweet, happy, all around loving, kind-hearted person," said relatives on a GoFundMe page set up after the crash. "No one ever expects for it to happen to them."

The crash happened about 6:50 a.m. Monday.

The driver who hit her — 26-year-old Timothy Haas — fled the scene. He was later arrested on drunk driving and hit-and-run charges.

Leiwalo and her longtime partner, Anthony Cruz, moved to Las Vegas five years ago with their 9-year-old son, Leiwalo's sister told Hawaii News Now.

They were expecting their second son in May.

Cruz told KVVU in Las Vegas that he still expects "Nikki" to walk through the door.

"It's still unreal," he said. "I don't want to believe it."
