HANAPEPE, KAUAI (HawaiiNewsNow) -

A house fire in Hanapepe killed 2 pet cats Wednesday, and caused upwards of $300,000 in damage.

Kauai fire officials say the fire ignited around 10:30 a.m. at a home on Puolo Road.

Firefighters from the Hanapepe fire station were first to arrive on scene where they found flames burning the carport and part of the home. Crews from Waimea, Kalaheo and Lihue also responded.

A woman who was home at the time was able to escape uninjured, but KFD says it appears her two pet cats died from smoke inhalation.

Within half an hour, the fire was under control and extinguished.

American Red Cross volunteers are working to assist the displaced residents. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
