HILO, HAWAII (HawaiiNewsNow) - A Hilo man is in police custody on the Big Island after setting an acquaintance on fire Friday afternoon.
At about 1:30 p.m. on March 16, Dalston Cortez allegedly showed up at a mutual acquaintance's home, threw an unknown flammable liquid on the victim, and set him on fire.
Big Island police say they believe the incident is related to an earlier disagreement between the two men.
The victim, 30-year-old man from Hilo, was taken to the Hilo Medical center and then flown to Oahu for additional treatment on Friday afternoon. The victim is in fair condition at Straub Medical Center with second- and third-degree burns on his upper legs and lower torso.
On Saturday evening, Cortez turned himself in to officers at the Pahoa Station and on Monday afternoon police charged Cortez with one count of first-degree assault.
His bail was set at $10,000.
Cortez is currently in police custody pending a court appearance scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
